How to Plug a USB Flash Drive Into a Wireless Access Point
Streamline your wireless network setup by utilizing a wireless access point and a USB flash drive. A wireless access point is a piece of networking hardware that allows a computer to connect to the network without cables. Access points are often used to add wireless capability to an existing wired network. Some feature built-in USB ports and support for Windows Connect Now technology. Take advantage of this option by using a USB flash drive to save your wireless network settings.
Instructions
1 Plug the USB flash drive into an open USB port on your computer. Click “Start” in the lower left-hand corner of the desktop. Select “Control Panel” and choose “Network and Internet Connections.” Click on the “Wireless Network Setup Wizard” icon in the lower right-hand corner of the window.
2 Click “Next” on the first page of the Wireless Network Setup Wizard. Choose a name for your wireless network and type it into the box next to “Network name (SSID).” Click “Next.” Select the option “Use a USB flash drive.” Click “Next.” Choose your flash drive in the drop-down menu next to “Flash drive.” You can identify the flash drive by opening “My Computer” from the Start menu. Under “Devices with Removable Storage,” look for the name of the flash drive manufacturer and take note of the letter in parentheses next to it. Choose this letter in the drop down menu in the wizard. Click “Next.”
3. Wait for the computer to save the settings to your flash drive. This can take up to 30 seconds. Remove the flash drive from the computer by pulling it directly out.
4 Attach the flash drive to the USB port on the access point. This is usually found on the back of the device. Make sure the access point is plugged in and powered on. Wait up to 30 seconds. It may blink three times to indicate that the setup is complete.
5 Plug the USB flash drive back into the computer to complete the setup process. Follow the Wireless Network Setup Wizard prompts to finish installation. You will see your access point listed on the page that indicates that the wizard has been successfully completed. Click “Finish.”
